A Referral Introduction Is a Starting Point, Not the Buyer’s Requirements Brief
A referral can explain why two parties might speak without establishing what the eventual buyer needs. Before preparing a detailed recommendation, separate the referrer’s understanding from the end user’s confirmed task. This preserves the value of the introduction without turning second-hand context into an accepted scope.
Keep the origin of the information visible
Identify whether a statement came from the referrer, the prospective buyer or the seller’s own interpretation. A person who recommends a provider may know the broad problem but not the current constraints, decision authority or intended use. Do not upgrade a helpful description into a buyer-approved requirement. Keep uncertain details framed as questions rather than filling them with familiar assumptions from another opportunity.
Clarify the task through the appropriate relationship
Within an authorized conversation, ask the relevant buyer to describe the decision and what a useful result would look like. The purpose is not to make someone repeat everything unnecessarily; it is to verify the information that would materially affect the recommendation. A referrer’s preference should not overrule the buyer’s actual workflow or become proof of available budget. Keep contact preferences and information-sharing boundaries with the normal relationship process.
Prepare a recommendation that shows what remains open
Use confirmed needs as the basis and state important assumptions that still need review. If the referral concerns a different business unit or a changed project, preserve that distinction instead of importing the earlier context wholesale. An introduction alone does not authorize importing a contact list, sharing private correspondence or contacting additional people. The resulting brief can be concise while still explaining which parts came from direct confirmation and which are preliminary.

Worked example
Illustrative example: a fictional adviser introduces a seller to a team said to need reporting help. The team’s own conversation reveals that its immediate task is a handoff review. The seller adjusts the recommendation to that confirmed task instead of treating the adviser’s broad description as an approved implementation brief.
