Split a Compound Discovery Question Before Filling in the Answer

A discovery question can combine priority, timing and implementation into one sentence. The buyer may answer only one part, leaving the seller unsure which other parts remain open. Before turning a brief reply into a complete opportunity record, separate the questions and connect the answer to what it actually addresses.

Find the distinct decisions inside the question

Review whether each part could reasonably have a different answer. Asking what matters most and when a change could happen combines a priority question with a timing question. That may be acceptable for an opening conversation, but it does not make the answers interchangeable. For a consequential detail, choose a clear individual question rather than adding several assumptions to the end of a long sentence.

Follow the answer rather than completing the pattern

If the reply addresses one part, acknowledge that information and keep the other part unresolved. Do not treat a yes, a preference or an example as confirmation of every clause in the original question. Within an already authorized conversation, ask the next relevant question in plain language. The purpose is understanding, not an interrogation checklist; the buyer should be able to explain the situation without being forced into the seller’s preferred categories.

Write a summary that preserves the distinction

Before sharing the internal recap, check that each material conclusion has an answer supporting that specific point. A confirmed priority can coexist with an unknown timeline. If the original question made the exchange ambiguous, improve the next question instead of making the summary sound more certain. This is independently authored conversation-planning guidance. It does not assert that CloseRail detects compound questions, verifies a transcript or provides any particular discovery feature, and it authorizes no new outreach.

Copyable worksheet

Use one row for each field. Mark unknown information clearly and retain the original records.

Next single question if conversation continues____________________

Worked example

Illustrative example: a fictional seller asks which report matters most and when it must be available. The buyer names a report but gives no date. The recap records the priority and leaves timing open, rather than converting the answer into an invented delivery deadline or a confirmed purchase schedule.
